We see some peoples among us who are so much diet conscious that they almost have memorized all the food’s advantages for health and its disadvantages for health and we see them talking about the calories term they often use when eating some food. So what do they mean by this word calories? Is it some kind of food ingredient or something else? Well it is not an ingredient of some food or some special kind of name of some food. It is a unit of measurement, not like the measurement of weight or length or anything like that but it is the measurement of energy because it is a unit of energy. When we say that this food contains this amount of calories like 80 calories or more then it means by eating this food we or our body can gain the specific amount of energy by some physical exertion or by doing some exercise that keeps us fit all the time.
Through physical exercise the energy burned in our body is that specific energy which is gained by our body by eating good foods. Well we all know that energy is measured or it has a unit of measurement which is called “Joules”. But in case of food, we cannot say that we are eating this amount of joules or else. That will be weird though because everything in this world which is measured specifically has its unique measurement unit too.
We cannot assign something’s unit to anything else. Everything which can be measured in this world, has its own specific unit of measurement which specifies its properties and its descriptions etc. well to explain calorie unit, it is can be simply said that it is also equals to some joules that is 1 Calorie is equal to 4.18 Joules. This term Calorie is used in our daily nutrition and healthy life but not in ordinary regular days in which we eat without bothering to think about it.
For further its explanation it can be classified in further its types. There are two types of calories:
- A small calorie: Its symbol is cal. 1 cal is the amount of energy required to raise one gram of water by one degree Celsius.
- A large calorie. Its symbol is Cal, kcal. 1 Cal is the amount of energy required to raise one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius.
Well its definition is mentioned here, but it is not written here just to memorize the definition. So to know about the calories of different foods, we should get some calorie chart in which there are healthy and nutritious diets are mentioned with details of calories the respectively food contains separately.
